Beyond the code

What sport and photography taught me

This site belongs to a developer, but also to someone who trains, climbs, takes photos and is passionate about many subjects. These practices shaped how I work as much as my studies did.

Rigor, rep after rep

I spent four years training with weights. There is no cheating: a program is followed, a load is logged, progress is measured. Nothing comes from one heroic session; everything comes from consistency, session after session, even on the days I don't feel like it.

That is where I got into the habit of rigor: plan, execute cleanly, measure, adjust. Exactly what is expected of a developer who ships code at regular intervals.

Fall, try again, and eventually succeed

After weight training I moved on to climbing, always bouldering. A boulder problem is worked: you try, you fall, you read the route better, you try again, and you fall again. Then one day the move goes. I learned to push hard but smartly: every fall gives information, and I don't give up until I understand what is blocking me.

Climbing also wears you down. Fingers, shoulders, skin, falls: the body takes a beating, and I don't hide it. Learning to manage pain, to tell fatigue from injury and to recover is part of the practice. It is a lesson in endurance, but also in being clear-eyed about your own limits.

Photography

An eye for detail, especially with animals

I have been taking photos for a long time, mostly of animals, because I adore them. Photographing an animal takes patience: waiting for the right moment, anticipating a movement, framing quickly and well without disturbing it.

It gave me a sense of framing, light and detail, which I find again when polishing an interface: visual hierarchy, spacing, contrast.

Curiosity · English

Always learning something else

I am very curious and interested in many different subjects, well beyond computing. It pushes me to try a new technology, to understand how things work underneath, and to connect fields that have nothing to do with each other. A versatile profile rather than one locked into a single tool.

I watch a lot of English-language content, which gave me real ease in expressing myself in depth, both spoken and written, beyond school English. It is useful every day: documentation, technical sources, and soon an international internship.

Community involvement

The Efrei climbing association

I am part of the ESC, the climbing association of Efrei. It organizes climbing sessions for its members and has already passed 800 members: it is one of the biggest associations at the school.

What I do

I run sessions and teach members how to climb, bouldering, the discipline I have always practiced.

  • Welcoming beginners and showing them the basics
  • Explaining a move simply, adapted to each person
  • Looking after the group's safety

What it gives me

Teaching is learning twice: to explain a move, you have to have understood it. This stance also serves in a company: documenting, guiding a newcomer, explaining a technical choice to someone who is not a developer.

  • Ease in front of a group
  • Getting involved beyond classes

From sport to code

What it concretely changes for a team

Each practice left me with a work habit that I find again in my daily life as an engineer.

Weight training

Rigor

I plan, I test, I review. Clean code is built like progress at the gym: in small measured increments, not in bursts.

Climbing

Perseverance

Faced with a stubborn bug, I don't let go: every failure gives a clue, like a fall on a boulder problem. I search, isolate and retry until I understand.

Climbing

Managing effort

I can keep going over time and handle fatigue and deadline pressure without burning out or spreading myself thin.

Association

Teaching

I explain simply, I guide beginners, and I speak equally well to technical people and to users who are not.

Photography

Eye for detail

Framing, light, visual hierarchy: I notice what is off in an interface before the user has to suffer it.

Curiosity

Curiosity and English

I pick up new technologies quickly and read documentation and sources in English without friction.
